Our Mission Statement
Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Lord of new mankind, and to live a new life as the redeemed in God’s image through the church.
The History of Daegu Church
Daegu Church was born in the spring of 1977 through Rev. Hyun Rae Lee and a small group of students who followed him.
Rev. Lee, the senior pastor of Daegu Church, had a ministry in the city of Choongju, South Korea, where he preached the Gospel to high school and college students. He experienced a turning point in his ministry when he came to these important revelations about the nature of life under God:
First, he realized that though the word of God is perfect, man’s capacity to understand and accept His word is limited by the maturity of their true being. Because of this, Rev. Lee’s ministry focuses on restoring the true being of man, our inkyeuk (pronounced /in-kyeog/), rather than vigorously studying and reciting the Bible.
Secondly, he realized that God disciplines and cleanses us to be holy and blameless so that we may become the radiant bride of Christ. Thus, Rev. Lee ceased his own efforts to improve himself and instead entrusted his life with the Lord, who would do His work through him.
Just as life grows where seeds are planted, the church will appear wherever the Lord, who is life, is present. Rev. Lee’s third realization was that the only thing needed to build a church was to plant the seed of life, which is Jesus Christ.
Finally, Rev. Lee realized that God’s calling is not for him to embark on a great mission, but to become the radiant bride of Christ. Since then, his sole concern has been Jesus Christ and His bride, the church, and emulating the example of Jesus Christ’s life and death.
Through these revelations, the ministry of Rev. Lee has grown to become the Daegu Church it is today – a global congregation of people who share the fellowship in the Body of Christ and express God together in His image.
Our Churchlife: The Fellowship among the Brothers and Sisters
The church is the present body of the Lord and the image of God on earth. It is New Jerusalem, the ultimate promise to mankind. The church is the bride of Jesus Christ, with the hope of becoming blameless and holy for our Lord.
To make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word. (Eph. 5:26)
The church is not made by man, but appears wherever the head, our Lord, is present. Thus, the church cannot be a closed pen where only the contained flock may eat. It must be a green pasture where sheep may graze freely and according to the needs of their bodies. The role of our pastors and leaders is not to manage the sheep with restrictive laws and institutions, but to supply the nature of Christ and live among the congregation as examples.
However, the Most High does not live in houses made by men. As the prophet says: ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me?’ says the Lord. Or where will my resting place be? (Acts. 7:48)
In Daegu Church, we do not create artificial systems to conduct our day-to-day churchlife. These man-made hierarchies do not convey the liberating and accepting nature of God. Rather, it is man’s true being – his inkyeuk – that enables us to be in the position to fulfill God’s purpose, which is to express His nature as His image.
Because we do not live by artificial systems, our worship services happen spontaneously by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We also have small group fellowship meetings where anyone, without exception, may share their experience of Christ’s grace in their lives.
Our Global Congregation
For the last 40 years, Rev. Hyun Rae Lee has traveled far and wide to preach the gospel to anyone whose hearts and ears were open. As a result, many local fellowship meetings and church branches were created to support our brothers and sisters beyond Daegu. Geographic distance is not a barrier in the living stream of our fellowship, and our church is present worldwide across many different countries. Today, anyone can access Daegu Church’s message and connect with our brothers and sisters through the Internet.
